Lightning Safety

Summer is the Peak Season for one of the nation's deadliest weather phenomena- lightning. On average, 67 people are killed each year due to lightning. Here are some tips to protect you and your family this summer season.

If Lightning Strikes:

  1. Find Shelter in a Building or Car.
  2. Unplug appliances and avoid using telephone.
  3. Avoid water (bath, washing hands, toilet)
  4. Turn off the air conditioner
  5. If outside
    • and in the woods take shelter under shorter trees
    • and boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter IMMEDIATELY.
    • Keep low to the ground (SQUAT)

If Struck:

  1. ALWAYS CALL 911
  2. Treat for burns
    • Both where the lighting entered and left
  3. Begin Rescue Breathing if needed
