Bicycle Safety Helmets: Wear a helmet at all times, no matter how short or long the bike ride is. A majority of bike crashes happen near home. Everyone riding a bicycle of any sort, should wear a helmet. This includes children riding bicycles with training wheels or a tricycle. Children in bicycle seats or those being towed in a riding wagon should also wear a helmet. Many bicycle injuries can be prevented by wearing a properly fitted helmet. Make sure that your helmet fits correctly. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has more information on how to fit a helmet. Be sure that helmets meet standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Snell Memorial Foundation or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Look for a label or a sticker on the box or inside the helmet indicating that it meets the above standards. Other Safety Tips: Wear closed shoes when riding a bike. Make sure your bike and your child's bike have good brakes, a front light and effective reflecting material. Ride only in safe areas and at safe times. Children should not ride after dusk. Doing so requires special skills and equipment and few kids are so equipped. Children should always ride on the right with the flow of traffic. Almost one fourth of bicycle-car collisions occur from bicyclist riding against traffic. Make sure bikes are the correct size for the rider. Learn about bicycle etiquette, laws, and safe riding practices and teach your children about them. For Additional Information: |
