Thank you for inquiring with the Lincoln Way Chapter of the American Red Cross.  To register for any of the classes below, please mail your name, address and phone number to 426 Fifth Street Ames, Iowa 50010 with your course registration fee (for all regular, full courses; not challenge classes.) You can also call us at our office during business hours (8:30am-5pm M-F) at 515.232.5104 and register and pay via credit card by phone. Payments are required at the time of class enrollment. We accept credit card by phone, check by mail or you can stop in. If payment is not received at time of registration you will not be considered enrolled and no spot will be reserved for you. Most classes do fill up quickly so please make sure to register and pay asap!

Please note the following when registering for any class:
  * All classes are subject to be canceled if minimum enrollment of six participants is not met.                                             

  * All community classes are taught at the chapter office unless otherwise noted.  
  * Each date is a separate class session unless otherwise noted.
  * First Aid and CPR may be taken separatly for the Saturday combination course.
  * You will receive a reminder call the week of the class. 
  * Challenge courses can be paid for at the time of the course (they are held the 2nd or 3rd Monday of the month.)
  * If you are interested in scheduling a work site course, please visit the Workplace Class List.
  * If you fail a course, there is no refund (except for instructor courses- the cost of materials and instructor might apply)

CPR-ADULT; 3 hours; certification good for one-year (1)


Recognizing and caring for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, handling emergency situations until advanced medical help can take over.  Adult CPR and basic precautions for preventing disease transmission.

CPR-ADULT RECERT (CHALLENGE); 45min-1hour; 
certification good for one-year (1)
The Challenge is designed for people who want to renew their Adult CPR certificate without taking the class again. If you feel that you know the material and the skills well enough to "test out", a Challenge could be just right for you. If you have a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association certificate, you may re-take the challenge as many times as needed as long as your certificate remains current. If your certificate is NOT current, you may enroll in a Challenge one time only. If you do not have a current certificate and do not pass, you will be referred to the appropriate full-length class. The person challenging is responsible for reviewing the appropriate workbook beforehand. Do not expect the instructor to coach or train. You will be expected to demonstrate all the skills and pass a written test with 80% or better to earn a new certificate.

CPR- ADULT, INFANT AND CHILD; 5 hours; certification good for one-year (1)
Preventing, recognizing and providing basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults over the age of twelve (12), and infants and children under the age of twelve (12) until advanced medical help can take over. Basic precautions for preventing disease transmission.  Included optional child AED training.

FIRST AID BASICS; 2 hours; certification good for three-years (3)
Basic care for injuries or sudden illnesses until advanced medical care can take over. Handling emergency situations; basic disease transmission precautions; recognizing and caring for bleeding, wounds, sudden illness; and immobilizing muscle, bone and joint injuries.  Does not include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies. Meets OSHA guidelines for First Aid.

CPR/AED PROFESSIONAL RESCUER; 5 hours; good for one year (1)
Recognizing and caring for breathing and cardiac emergencies, two-rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation mask and bag-valve-mask.  Also, knowledge and skills needed to care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the use of an AED.

EMERGENCY CHALLENGE

Emergency Challenges are those sessions either one on one or group scheduled outside a regularly scheduled challenge or full course.  They are typically for someone who needs certification right away. (see above for full description)

Aquatics Courses -
taught at the Ames Parks and Recreation Center Pool;
Ames High Pool or Gateway Center- To register, please call 239-5361
LIFEGUARDING; 31 hours; Lifeguarding/First Aid good for three years (3) CPR/AED-PR good for one (1) must be renewed yearly
Teaches what to do in case of an emergency in or around water; particularly to prevent drowning and injury; includes CPR/AED- Professional Rescuer and First Aid Basics.

Prerequisites: 15 yrs. old; swim 300 yards continuously, 20 yards front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface, swim 20 yards back with the object, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Specialty Courses

LAY RESPONDER CPR/FA/AED INSTRUCTOR; 16 hours; Authorization good for two-years (2)
Teaches instructor candidates to plan, organize and conduct Lay Responder First Aid/CPR/AED courses, including First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace, First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community, First Aid-Responding to Emergencies, Blended Learning First Aid/CPR/AED and Sport Safety Training.
Prerequisites: 16 yrs. old; Proficiency in First Aid, CPR, and AED skills

BABYSITTER'S TRAINING; 6 hours; Authorization good for life or content change
This interactive, activity-based program gives 11-15 year-olds the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants through primary school-aged children. It focuses on injury prevention, first aid, basic childcare, decision-making, problem solving and leadership skills, and provides an excellent opportunity for building self-confidence. Participants receive handbook and babysitters handbag.
Prerequisite: 11 years old at the time of the class

PET FIRST AID; 3 hours; Authorization good for life or content change
This course teaches basic first aid techniques for common illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions for both cats and dogs. Participants will have the opportunity to practice emergency skills on pet manikins. Course participants receive a Pet First Aid reference guide, which is included in the course fee. This course is appropriate for all ages.
